What Yesterday’s Incredible Super Bowl Game Teaches Us About How Amazing Achievements Happen!
If you’re not from the U.S, you may know very little about the Super Bowl. So I’ll use the following reference to describe yesterday’s game.
How amazing happens!
Your team is in the finals of the World Cup. You’re losing 4-0, with just 15 minutes left in the game. The other team is faster. They’re completely controlling the game and playing with huge confidence.
With virtually no hope of victory, one of your teammates suddenly steals the ball to give your team an opportunity. You score. You’re still way behind, but then another teammate makes another great play that gives your team another opportunity. You score again.
As time is running out, your defense holds. Your offense is energized. Other team members start making key plays. You score again, and then again. And then in overtime, your team scores yet again, and incredibly, you win!
This is what happened in the Super Bowl yesterday, when the New England Patriots came back from 28-3 late in the game against the Atlanta Falcons to win, 34-28. Many are calling it the greatest comeback in sports history.
Watching this happen, many people were shocked. Many were amazed. For me, I felt incredibly inspired. How do some people experience something so special like this? How do they achieve this kind of success? As the Patriots best player, Tom Brady, said afterwards, “We’re all going to remember this for the rest of our lives.”
The two most fundamental qualities that lead to outstanding success
I’m no sports analyst, but there are two things that I saw while watching the Patriots’ incredible comeback that deeply impressed me. The first is a group of team members who believed in themselves. They believed in their coaches and leaders. They believed in their training and approach to success, and stayed disciplined. But most importantly, they believed in their capabilities and in each other.
After the game, I thought about my own company and our colleagues. How committed were we all to each other and to what degree we are doing? I know we’re not a sports team, but those who work in the same company also share a common objective. And I believe we all want to win and be successful.
The second thing I saw is a team of professionals who continued to play hard and perform their roles, regardless of the situation. While I saw stars start to play like stars when it counted, I also saw a lot of different individuals do something exceptional at a critical moment to give their team another chance.
So in the end, there was no single hero. There was no one person who could be credited with the outcome. Instead, what occurred was a collective accumulation of solid performances from every team member, along with some exceptional contributions from a few. It was the classic definition of a complete and total team effort. As was highlighted after the game by Patriots coach, Bill Bellinchek, the team’s motto all year long has been simply, “Do your job!” That’s exactly what each Patriot player did.
When ordinary people achieve special things together
For most of us, it’s a rare thing to be part of an exceptional situation for our career. It’s very fortunate to even have the chance to work with a great group of people, great leaders, and a great organization that has the ability and opportunity to do something great.
And even if you do have that chance, many things can happen that can prevent you from achieving something great. Frankly, some luck is usually involved. But as the saying goes, “Luck usually happens to those who are well prepared.” And to recall another quote I once heard, “Special moments are achieved by ordinary people who do special things.”
So you don’t need to know anything about American football. You don’t even need to like sports. If you’re looking for a real, live inspiring story that can show you how to be a part of and do something amazing with your career and life, then I highly recommend that you read about or watch parts of the Patriots’ Super Bowl victory yesterday. Not only was it an epic game, there’s a lot you can learn from it. In particular, how a group of highly committed professionals who all did their jobs, continued to believe in each other, and worked together as a team to achieve something that many people are simply calling, “amazing!”
