What To Do If Your University Degree Isn’t Helping You

最近我的同事给我看了一篇很多人follow的知乎的问题。这个问题关于有哪些对于你的职业成功非常重要的素质，但是在大学里没有好好学过或者发展过。

Recently, my colleague showed me a Zhihu question that many people are following. It’s about what key quality is very important for your career success, but you don’t learn or develop from your university education.

身为人力资源行业的专业人士，目前为止，我觉得最重要的特质是职商，抑或是知道该如何追求、达成事业成功。

As a talent industry professional, the biggest one to me, by far, is career sense. Or the understanding of how to pursue and achieve a successful career. 

为什么是职商呢？因为它能影响到职业成功的方方面面，包括职业选择、职业规划、职业决定、职业发展，以及加入合适平台，抓住最有吸引力的机会并好好表现的能力。

Why career sense? Because it impacts every aspect of your career success. This includes your job choices, career planning, career decisions, career development, ability to join platforms and situations that fit you, and ability to capture and perform well in opportunities that are most attractive to you. 

没有职商该如何达成事业成功？

How do you achieve your career success without career sense?

像所有事一样，在做好它之前，你首先得好好了解它。但大多数人踏入社会时，对追求事业成功知之甚少。他们职商不高，甚至一点儿都没有。在走上工作岗位时，他们不知道怎样才算是成功的事业，更不知道对事业成功而言最重要的是哪些事。四年的大学教育就是这后果，想想真是有些悲哀！怪不多那么多年轻人迷茫、困惑、恐惧、失落，对未来充满了不确定性。

Like everything else, before you do something well you need to understand it well first. But most enter the working world with little understanding of how to pursue a successful career. They have poor career sense, or none at all. They begin their career with little idea about what a successful career looks like, let alone what are the most important things they should do to achieve one. That this happens after four years of university education is crazy! It’s no wonder why so many young people are lost, confused, scared, frustrated, and uncertain about their future.

 9.How to attain your career objectives.

如果你是一个大学生想要培养职商，留在学校里是没有用的，而是要和职场上的人打交道。因此许多大学生会通过实习做更好的职业选择，在面试中拿出更好表现，毕业时充满自信，走上职场。老实说，与上四年课相比，一份好实习对你工作的益处更大。随便问问曾在优秀公司与优秀同事共事过的人就知道了。

By the way, if you’re a university student and want to develop your career sense, it’s not going to happen on campus. You need to interact with people in the working world. That’s why many university students who do internships make better career choices, perform better in interviews, and graduate with more confidence once they start working. Frankly, you can learn more that will benefit your career in a good internship than you can from four years of attending class. Just ask someone who has the chance to work with good people in a good job situation. 

如果你有机会找到好实习，不要害羞，也不要消极被动。抓住机会好好问问周围的人：

When you do get a chance to be in such a situation, don’t be shy or passive. Take advantage of your opportunity to ask those around you:

 1.你对这份工作有什么喜欢／不喜欢的地方？

 2.你对这个行业有什么喜欢／不喜欢的地方？

 3.你对在这种类型的公司里工作有什么喜欢／不喜欢的地方？（如跨国公司、小中大型公司、创业公司、本土公司等）

 4.哪些能力和特质对你的成功最重要？

 5.当初你是如何选择这个工作／公司／行业的？

 6.如果我想做你做的事，我该考虑哪些事？

 7.如果我想从事这份职业，现在应该做／注重哪些事？

 1.What do you like/dislike about what you do？

 2.What do you like/dislike about working in this industry?

 3.What do you like/dislike about working in this type of company (e.g. multinational, small/mid-size/big company, start-up, local company, etc.)?

 4.What capabilities and qualities are most important for your success?

 5.How did you go about choosing this job/company/industry?

 6.What are the things I should consider if I also wanted to do what you do?

 7.What should I be doing/paying attention to now if I want to pursue this career?

想清楚这些问题后，你的职商就会大大提高。因为在追求、达成事业成功这点上，你无需重新发明、发现、苦思冥想新方法。最佳实践、优秀习惯和聪明方法早已经有了。所以提高职商的最佳方法是找到在你感兴趣领域已获成功的人，向他们学习。只要观察、弄明白、模仿他们的做事方式，寻求他们的建议和观点，利用他们的经验就行了。

If you do this, your career sense is going to improve a lot. Because when it comes to pursuing and achieving success, you don’t need to reinvent, discover, or figure out new ways to do something well. Best practices, good habits, and smart approaches exist already. So the best way to improve your career sense is to identify and learn from those who are already successful at what you’re also interested in becoming successful at too. Just observe, understand, and copy how they do it well. Seek out their advice and insights. Make use of their experience.
