尽早确定你将来想要拥有的领导品质

 Identify Early On The Leadership Qualities You Want To Possess Someday


作为一个CEO,我有自己清晰明确的领导风格和特点,但这些并不是一夜之间就能获得的。相反,跟很多优秀的领导和成功的高管一样,我用了很多年才塑造好自己的风格。实际上,我开始确定自己想成为的领导类型时,是在我快30岁的时候,我第一次开始规划自己未来要成为一个领导和高管的模样。

 

As a CEO today, I definitely have my very clear and well-defined leadership style and characteristics.  But they weren’t acquired overnight.  Rather, like most good leaders and successful executives, I developed them over many years.  In fact, I began identifying the type of leader and leadership characteristics that I wanted to possess someday back when I was in my late-20s, when I first began picturing myself as a future leader and executive.


如果你也在规划你未来的管理或领导角色,那么你首先想到的是以后想成为什么样的领导。尤其是,你一定要在脑海中明确那些很强的经理或者商业精英所拥有的最突出的特征。当然,每个成功领袖的个人风格和长处是不同的。同样,每个人也追求不同的领导风格,这取决于你最喜欢谁以及想如何发展。但是,及早地识别这些,你就能够更有效地培养自己,实现目标。

 

If you’re also picturing yourself in future management or leadership roles, then you also want to first develop your idea of the type of leader you hope to become someday.  In particular, you should have an understanding in your mind about the most outstanding characteristics of a strong manager or business leader.  Of course, the individual styles and strengths of each successful leader are different.  Likewise, the leadership characteristics you want to target varies for each person, depending on which ones you most admire and wish to develop.  By identifying these early on though, you’ll be able be able to nurture and attain them more effectively.

For instance, the following are the leadership characteristics I identified for myself many years ago, based on my observation of those executives I was fortunate to know and looked up to:

Excellent Communicator

I’ve always been a good one-on-one communicator.  I believe it’s because I take a genuine interest in those I speak with.  However, I’ve also recognized the importance in business of strong presentation and writing skills.


对于高管而言,他们常常需要感染听众、传达概念、推广想法以及激励他人。因此,在早期,我总会寻找在别人面前练习说话的机会。多年来,我一直训练自己可以通过强调和快速切入主题形成简洁、有效的写作方式,我凭借列出问题和解决方案的高效交流能力做成了很多事。

 

Addressing audiences, communicating concepts, selling ideas, and motivating others happen often at an executive level.  Therefore, early on, I always sought opportunities to practice speaking in front of others.  Over the years, there have also been many instances where achieving a result was directly related to my ability to effectively communicate in writing the issues and what needed to be done.  I’ve trained myself over the years to write in a concise, impactful manner by highlighting and getting to the point quickly.

This is also referred to as your charisma, or the ability to lead others through your personality, intelligence, passion, creativity, focus, and/or even humor.

Many successful business executives are people that others are drawn to and want to follow.  It’s a powerful quality to be able to captivate others, whether it’s in selling an idea, motivating or leading a team, or building relationships.


温暖并包容

 Warm and Generous


尽管这一条不是每个人都必备的,但对我而言,我一直想要做一个温暖包容的上司。大多数人都喜欢温暖又包容的人,在职场也是这样,我相信在领导下属时,相比于对他们强加你的权威,温暖包容的方式会更有效。

 

 While this one may not be on everyone’s list, I’ve always identified it for the type of business leader I want to be.  Most of us respond to a person who is warm and generous.  In business as well, I believe these qualities are often rewarded and beneficial when leading others, rather than by imposing your authority on them.  


尽管一些领导会更正式一些,但我仍然相信如果你能塑造一个更容易接近的更开放的领导形象,你就能在他人那里得到更多的回报,即使你的管理风格可能比较严格或者高要求。那些能赢得下属的忠诚、信任和承诺的高管,往往能够像对待老板、客户一样对待秘书、初级职员。

 

While some leaders are more formal, if you can convey the more approachable and open qualities of your personality as a business leader then I believe your ability to attain the desired response and effort from others is greater, even if your management style may be more strict or demanding.  Executives I’ve seen who who are seen by others as the type of person who treat secretaries and junior staff the same way they treat their boss or clients are able to attract the loyalty, trust, and commitment of those they lead.

 尽管这对于一个你成为成功的高管非常重要,但这也是最难达成的,因为这主要是需要随时间推移以及经历的增多才能成长的。然而,快速理解事物并不难,想要借助深刻的理解力和洞察力来做出正确决定,还是需要在不同的场合下进行多次磨炼。换言之,这是经验换来的。


While essential to being a successful executive, it’s also one of the hardest to attain since it’s mainly developed over time and through your exposure to many situations.  While, it’s not so difficult to understand something quickly, gaining the deeper understanding and insights needed to make good decisions mainly happens through multiple encounters in different scenarios.  In other words, it’s comes with experience.


这些是我长期以来确定的自己的领导风格,但每个人的领导风格和长处都是不一样的,你可以突出自己擅长的点,比如你拥有强大的驱动力或激情、解决问题的能力或者整合资源的能力。在早期就识别自己的领导特点并学会如何应用,这将帮助你可以尽快发展自己高效舒适的领导管理风格,以在你的职业生涯中追求更高的机会。


These are the executive and leadership characteristics I’ve long identified for myself.  However, every person’s leadership style and strengths are different.  There are many others you may emphasize for yourself.  They may include having tremendous drive or passion, the ability to identify solutions, or the ability to manage resources.  Your identification of such leadership characteristics early on and how they apply to you will help you pursue them over time to develop your own effective, comfortable leadership and management style as you pursue increasingly higher level opportunities in your career.
