How To Make Sure Your Next Job Move Is A Very Good One


“唉呀,这个工作还没我上一个好!”不想有这种想法?如果你想在你的职业生涯找到一份好工作,那么有两个基本的观念你必须要理解。它们是:

  1) 适合的才是最好的

  2) 平台的局限也会变成为你的局限


“Oh man, this job is no better than my last one!” Want to avoid this thought? Then here are two fundamental concepts you need to understand if you want to make good job moves throughout your career. Embrace them and you'll make better job choices and join better employment situations. They are:

  1) It's all about fit

  2) Your platform's limitations will also be your limitations too


如果你能从这篇文章汲取到任何找到好工作的经验,那就应该是这两个观念。我在3.8号做的知乎Live中,分享了关于跳槽的五点看法,而这两个概念,正是这五点的基础。以下是这一次知乎Live的简单回顾。


If you take away anything from this article about making good job moves, it should be these two concepts. In my recent Zhihu Live webinar (on 3/8), they're what I based the five main things I shared on this topic on. Here's a brief recap.

内部因素先于外部因素——再说一遍。适合你的才是最好的。正如我一直对我指导的求职者强调的,工作和职业生涯的决策无关对错,亦无关好坏。只和你最看重的事情有关。想知道为什么那么多人的工作不如人意吗?因为他们追求外部因素,如头衔,薪资,大公司的品牌。他们随波逐流,人云亦云,循声附会。


Internal factors before external factors– I'll say it again. Good job decisions are all about fit. As I always tell the candidates I coach, job and career decisions are not about right or wrong, or good or bad. They're relative to what's most important to you. Want to know why many people end up in bad job situations? Because they chase external factors, like titles, salary, and big company names. They pursue trends, what looks or sounds good, or what others think is good.


但那些做出更好职业决策的人能更好的理解关键的内部因素,他们会在这些的基础上寻找新的工作机会。这些包括你可能充满激情的事物,你乐在其中或你真正感兴趣的东西,你最在意的或对你至关重要的事物。


But people who make better job choices have a better understanding of key internal factors, and then pursue new opportunities based on these. These include what you may have a passion for. What you enjoy doing or are genuinely interested in. What you care about most, or what's most important to you. 


举例来说,更快的职业发展是你的首要任务。你想成为一名国际级的专业人士,或想和高素质的人才一起工作。你爱好一个快节奏的、动态的工作环境,或者想更多地接触某些东西。你想做那些能令你有价值或有意义的事情。


For instance, faster career development is your top priority. You want to become an international-caliber professional, or want to work with high-caliber people. You like a more fast-paced, dynamic environment, or want to get more exposure to certain things. You want to do things that build your value or has meaning to you. For instance, early in my career, I was most interested in learning about business, building my soft skills, and handling bigger responsibilities. So these are what I sought in the new opportunities I pursued and based my job decisions on.

  •  有机会学习最佳的实践,成熟的流程,系统的方法等。


Think platform, not just job– Listen, you could have the most awesome job description. Promises from your boss to do many things. But if your platform has big limitations, then these will also be your limitations for you to achieve the success and career objectives you seek. People who are more successful, whether intentionally or not, join strong platforms or employment situations that can feed you. They feed you . . .

  •  good opportunities

  •  chances to build your capabilities and achievements

  •  access to high-caliber resources and outstanding people

  •  chances to work w/leading products and services

  •  chances to learn best practices, solid processes, systematic approaches, etc. 


无论公司是大是小,是外资或是本土,闻名与否,加入可以为你提供这些东西的公司,你将会发展得更快,获得更大的成功。


No matter if a company is big or small, international or Chinese, famous or not, join platforms that can offer you these things and you're going to develop faster and achieve greater success.

关键是要了解你正在考虑的平台——告诉你一些有趣的事情。我遇到的许多成功人士也会做出糟糕的工作决策。这很有趣,因为他们成功的一个重要原因是他们在做重要的商业决策时使用SWOT分析法(优势、劣势、机遇和威胁)。而在遇到需要做出重大职业决策的情况时,他们却失策了。他们反而更主观,更情绪化。朋友告诉他们这是一个好机会,他们就信了。他们的前任老板喊他们复合。通常,结果并不理想。


Key things to know about any platform you're considering– Tell you something interesting. Many successful people I meet also make bad job decisions. It's interesting because a big reason they're successful is because they use SWOT analysis (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats) when making important business decisions. But when making big job decisions, they don't. Instead, they're more subjective and emotional. They listen to a friend who told them that it's a good opportunity. Their ex-boss asked them to join him. Often, it doesn't turn out well.


不过,对于你正在考虑的任何就业情况,做SWOT分析也是一件很好的事情。比如,问你自己 . . . 


  •  平台的主要竞争优势是什么?

  •  你会向谁学习?

  •  在这个平台上表现良好的关键成功因素是什么?

  •  平台助你增长能力和取得成就的功能是什么?

  •  这个平台能够满足你寻找工作时最关心的三个关键因素吗?

  •  平台如何帮助你实现你的职业目标和你所追求的成功?


But doing a SWOT analysis is also a great thing to do for any employment situation you're considering. For instance, ask yourself . . .

  •  What are the platform's key competitive advantages?

  •  Who are the people you will learn from?

  •  What are the key success factors for performing well on this platform?

  •  What's the ability of the platform to help you build your capabilities and achievements?

  •  Does the platform provide the top 3 things that you care about most in a job situation you seek?

  •  What will I look like a year from now if I join this platform? 

  •  How does the platform help you achieve your career objectives and the success you seek?


基于你对这些问题的回答,你是否仍然认为你正在考虑的平台和机会是好的?


Based on your answers to these questions, do you still think the platform and opportunity you're considering is a good one?

判断优秀平台的迹象——目前为止一切都很顺利。但是如何确定你所听到的是真实的呢? 你要找一些迹象。以下是一些非常有用的参考标准,而且很难伪造。


  •  公司客户的质量

  •  公司产品和服务的质量

  •  公司的流程和惯例

Key indicators of strong/good platforms – So far so good. But how to be sure that what you hear is true or not? You look for key indicators, that's how. Here are some that are very positive signs, and are very hard to fake.


  •  The quality of the company's clients

  •  The quality of the company's products and services

  •  The company's processes and practices

  •  The backgrounds and track record of success of the management team

  •  How energetic and positive the people you meet and see are


你可以通过做调查,和别人交谈、提问以及通过关注办公室的环境和你交谈的人来找到这些问题的答案。就像我说的,人是很难假装非常投入一份工作的,或者假装喜欢现在的环境,假装对自己所处的环境有热情。如果你看到了这些正面的迹象,那很好! 如果你没有发现,那就不太好了。


You find out these things by doing your research, talking to others, and asking questions about them. And by paying attention to what you notice about the office environment and people you talk to. Like I said, it's hard to pretend that you're engaged in your work, like where you are, or are optimistic about your situation. So if you notice these things, that's good! Don't notice them, that's not good.

权衡来自他人的职业建议——我不知道别人是怎么想的,但每当有人希望我成功,给我职业建议,我总是感到很幸运。但同时,我也意识到,虽然他们的出发点是好的,他们的建议可能并不适合我。所以,我告诉求职者,当其他人给你提出职业建议时,要慎重考虑它的来源。那些在职业领域成功的人的建议就是最值得倾听的。对那些还未取得成功的人,他们能给你的只是他们的观点和看法,并不是经验之谈。


Weighing Career Advice From Others– I don't know about you, but I always feel fortunate whenever someone takes enough of an interest in my success to give me career advice. At the same time, I always recognize that while their intentions are good, their advice may not be right for me. So I tell candidates that when listening to the advice of others, always consider the source. The best people to listen to are ones who have been successful at what they're telling you? For those who haven't, then it's mainly their opinion or point of view that they're sharing with you, not their experience. 


记住,他们不是你!他们的观点是站在他们的立场,不是你的。他们最看重的可能不是你最重视的东西! 人们对自己不会真正去做的事情很容易给出建议,当然别人不会有意的给你坏的职业建议。你要知道你才是应该对你自己职业决策完全负责的那个人。


Finally, keep in mind, they're not you! Their perspective is theirs, not yours. What they value most may not be what you value most. It's also easy to give advice about something you don't have to actually do. Ultimately, it's never about others trying to give you bad advice. It's about you being 100% responsible for the job choices you make.


最后一点我想分享的是,你的职业发展是一个漫长的过程,我的意思是,你当下选择站到的职业位置,决定了之后你能抓住的境况和机遇。所以,虽然当下对你来说非常重要,好的职业决策应该能帮助你实现更加光明的未来。我希望这五个点能让你跳槽顺利!


One last thought about making good job decisions Your career lasts a long time. Meaning, the job situations you choose and join today will determine the situations and opportunities you can capture tomorrow. So while today feels most important to you, good job decisions are ones that will help you achieve a brighter future. I hope these five things will help make your next job move a very good one!
