Now More Than Ever, The Importance Of Mindset.
New years are supposed to be a fresh start. They’re supposed to be a time of optimism and renewed hope. Unfortunately, not this year. It already looks like it’s going to be a tougher year than last year, which wasn’t such a great one for many.
Even before this novel coronavirus, the maturing economy and trade wars were already creating a more difficult environment and market. With this new threat as well now, both people and businesses are under even more pressure to pursue new ways of doing things. There’s even a greater urgency to develop new skills and qualities to become stronger and more competitive.
There are no easy answers or solutions to doing this. It’s going to take time and effort. What can be said is that you can no longer have a “business as usual” attitude and approach to things. Instead, it will be your ability to pursue changes that will help you to improve and overcome the challenges you face. And, now more than ever, having the right mindset is critical to making this happen.
In particular, two key perspectives are especially needed to succeed today. The first is being realistic about what’s going on around you. By this, I mean paying attention to and understanding what’s most important for you to do to be successful in your situation. Ignoring or avoiding new realities is a dangerous approach if you want to have a better future. If you’re slow to recognize what you need to build and the things you need to do during this time, you’re going to fall behind and be less successful.
The other is staying positive about your ability to change and improve your situation. That’s not easy, especially now, when there’s a lot of bad news and uncertainty out there. This is on top of many industries slowing down and many companies seeing declining business. And budgets being cut that support your development and success, where you are already being asked to do more with less resources and support.
But for every challenge you face, there are opportunities. You have a choice as to how you respond. You can choose to be negative. You can choose to avoid or resist the realities of your situation, and let them overtake you. Or, you can make something positive happen out of them that will help you achieve a brighter future. Doing the latter begins by having a perspective and mindset that is both realistic and positive.
One last thing. And that is to have a good balance between being realistic and positive. Being too realistic can lead to being negative and inactive. Being too positive can result in being naïve and simplistic. You’re going to hear a lot of things from a lot of different people and sources. Some of it is going to be worthwhile to listen to, some of it is not. So try to be as mature and objective as you can as well.
We are all facing the same realities, concerns, and difficult challenges. But as the saying goes, This too shall pass. Remember that many of the things you do now will have a big impact on your future success. Don’t lose sight that you’re still in the world’s best market of economic growth. Overall, there are still more opportunities available to you than any other place on the planet. So stay strong and stay healthy. Use this time to develop new skills and expertise. Build your grit and confidence to create new opportunities for yourself and overcome tough challenges. And pursue things that will help you to come out of a difficult situation even better than before.
