What's your opinions on 90s generation who like to switch jobs?
What I tell people who change jobs a lot is, “Your career lasts a long time.” That’s a reality that you can’t ignore. Let me put it this way. If you change your job 2-3 times a year, this means that in 3 years you’ll have worked 6-9 jobs. What kind of attractive opportunities do you think you’ll be able to attract then? What top employer do you think will be interested in hiring you then?
I’ve seen many candidates commit “career suicide” before they’re 30 years old. It’s because they were too short-sighted early in their career. They only considered things from their perspective, and not from an employer’s perspective. From their point of view, they were just pursuing and searching for what they’re most interested in, or what they really enjoy doing. They view their moves as job changes.
But employers see it as job hopping. From the point of view of top employers, these candidates aren’t stable, mature, or persistent to stay with anything for very long. But the biggest negative to changing jobs so often is that these candidates don’t have any significant achievements or strong capabilities to show future employers.
And then it’s just a slippery slope of 1) only having 2nd and 3rd tier job opportunities available to you, and 2) climbing out of a deep hole to turn around your career. If you doubt this, talk to a senior manager in any top company and ask him if he’s ever hired anyone who has had 5-6 jobs by the time they were 30 years old.
