When I was in my 20s and began my first corporate job (after several years as an R&D engineer), I was nervous and scared. Confident? No! I knew there were many things that I did not know and could not do yet. I also knew that confidence is built on achievements. On being good at what you do. And on having capabilities and expertise that is highly regarded by others. All these would take time for me to develop and acquire.
So to not be overwhelmed by what I didn’t know and couldn’t do, I focused instead on delivering the best thing I could offer as a newbie to the team and to my more experienced colleagues. That was a great attitude. Or my willingness to learn, get involved, and support their success.
Interestingly, I instantly became someone that my colleagues liked to teach and mentor. Someone that they were willing to explain things to and share their expertise with. They all knew that I was inexperienced and new to the company and my position. All they wanted from me was to help the team be successful, which included their success too.
By the way, if you’re a newbie in the workplace, don’t compare yourself to those who are more experienced than you. View them as role models and benchmarks for what you want to become someday. Absolutely! But don’t make direct comparisons between yourself and them. Like this question says, your colleagues have been working for a while already. Of course, they can do most things much better than you. So no need to put any additional pressure on yourself to be like them yet.
For me, I just delivered what my colleagues needed most from me for my position level and role, which were a positive attitude and my very best effort. From my experience as a newbie once, your colleagues will recognize and support your sincere desire to do your job well. And you’ll be more relaxed and more confident within your new work situation.
